{"id":1067,"date":"2011-02-04T16:40:52","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T22:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookcountypd.org\/blog\/?p=1067"},"modified":"2011-02-25T09:02:35","modified_gmt":"2011-02-25T15:02:35","slug":"the-latest-information-on-the-budget-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/local3315.org\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/02\/04\/the-latest-information-on-the-budget-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"The Latest Information on the Budget Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sisters and Brothers:<\/p>\n<p>After meeting with management\u00a0 today, here is the latest information on the budget crisis:<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who read the budget proposal and did not notice any job cuts, you are not alone.\u00a0 However, if you look closely at page M-11, you will see an entry for Turnover Adjustment that amounts to $5,806,924.\u00a0 This represents the nearly six million dollars which President P plans on cutting from our 2011 budget.\u00a0 President P does not have the authority to\u00a0tell the\u00a0Public Defender\u00a0where to make those cuts.\u00a0 Therefore, while the budget document does not show the actual staffing cuts, Judge Cunningham must nonetheless shave almost six million dollars from the budget.\u00a0 In a meeting with Judge Cunningham&#8217;s representatives today (2\/4\/2011), his representatives informed the Local that the six million dollar budget hole will be filled in part by the\u00a0elimination of 68 bargaining unit\u00a0attorney positions, of which 5 are vacancies.\u00a0 That means 63 bargaining unit public defenders laid off.<\/p>\n<p>But the fight has just begun.\u00a0 President P&#8217;s Budget must still face a vote before the County Board.\u00a0 Nine votes are needed for passage.\u00a0 That is why your calls, letters, emails, and attendance at budget hearings is essential to maintaining the current staffing levels in our office.\u00a0 There is no time to waste.\u00a0 No doubt, it will be an uphill battle.\u00a0 But we&#8217;ve done it before and we can do it again.<\/p>\n<p>Stay updated by checking your emails daily.<\/p>\n<p>In Solidarity,<\/p>\n<p>K.
