HAPPY MAY DAY!

The Board wishes everyone a happy May Day – a time to be reminded of the long history and struggle of workers for fairness on the job. Because of efforts of Public Defenders 25 years ago, our Local was formed, giving all of us a collective voice for bargaining with management, and negotiating compensation with the County. Since formation, the Union has served the greater interests of our Office – providing an environment for us to do the good work of representing the indigent. With the Union has come the promise of fair advancement, predictable assignment, protection from harassment, and opportunity to litigate grievances. With this the quality of our Office, and the quality of the services we provide, has increased. There is still a lot of work to do. We are all aware that our local Contract has expired, and has not yet been renewed. And there are other battles to fight, including the push by politicians to take away our pensions that we have worked hard for and paid into, while the politicians have failed to properly fund the pension for years. But being in a union means that we don’t fight these battles alone, but rather we get to stand next thousands of our brothers and sisters, giving us a voice, and leverage to be treated fairly.
HAPPY MAY DAY!
